Reckitt Benckiser Pakistan fined Rs. 1.25m over “deceptive marketing practices” for Dettol Surface Cleaner

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has imposed a fine on Reckitt Benckiser Pakistan for running a misleading commercial for Dettol Surface Cleaner, a household cleaning product.

The CCP has found the company to be in violation of Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010 and has not only misled its consumers but also harmed business interests of its competitors.

The advertisement made claims that ordinary surface cleaners were highly ineffective against germs, that Dettol could kill more germs than other surface cleaners like phenyl and that Dettol could kill 99.9% of germs. Reckitt submitted that the claims were based on a study carried out by its laboratories but CCP found that the study did not substantiate the claims against all types of phenyl.
