Prison Officials In California Decide Criteria for Inmates Wanting Sex-Reassignment Surgery

After a leading settlement which allows transgender inmates to get sex-reassignment surgery, prison officials in California, declared the criteria which must be met in order for inmates to qualify for the sex-reassignment surgery.

In order to regulate the entire procedure, California prison officials demand that inmates be referred or recommended by mental health professionals for the surgery. The inmates must be diagnosed with gender dysphoria, display publicly, the desire to have the surgery for at least two years, and they must live as the preferred gender for at least 12 months. These are the first rules agreed upon in a US prison system.
