The Brazilian British Lawyers Exchange Programme

Final call for host firms to take part in the Brazilian British Lawyers Exchange Programme

The Brazilian British Lawyers Exchange Programme for young lawyers is jointly organised by the Law Society of England and Wales and the Bar Council in partnership with the Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB) and Lex Anglo-Brasil.

The Programme, now in its third successful year, will see a group of Brazilian lawyers participating in a four week programme in London, which includes a short bespoke academic programme at BPP Law School, placement in solicitors’ firm and barristers’ chambers and a series of legal seminars. This will be shortly followed by a group of solicitors and barristers heading to Brazil for two weeks in March/April 2016 to undertake placements in law firms in Sao Paulo, a trip to the OAB headquarters in Brasilia and a networking programme.

Jonathan Smithers, president of the Law Society, said: “Brazil is a key market for our members and the success of the ongoing exchange programme highlights the valued and strong relationship we have with the Brazilian Bar. This scheme supports international firms to develop business in Brazil by building constructive relationships with lawyers from some of the country’s leading law firms.”

Frederico Singarajah, on behalf of Lex Anglo-Brasil, said: “Lex Anglo-Brasil is delighted that this wonderful initiative is being repeated. We are pleased to be involved both in the UK and in Brazil, via our subcommittees. We congratulate the OAB, Law Society of England and Wales and Bar Council for their efforts and delivery. The feedback last year was very positive and we look forward to the exchange being a permanent fixture in our calendars.”

The Law Society’s International Department is currently seeking law firms willing to host a Brazilian lawyer for one week, from 8 to 12 February 2016.

Interested firms should have experience in cross border, international work and be able to offer a mentor to assist the Brazilian lawyer throughout the duration of their placement. Placements should include some of the following elements:

• Discussion of ethics, code of conduct and some of the challenges of practice
• International strategy of the firm and areas of priority
• The opportunity to read and research and do written work
• Participation in meetings, conferences and firm social events

If you are interested in hosting a lawyer, please complete an application form and send it to [email protected].uk by Friday 4 December 2015.
