Symposium On “The State Of Criminal Justice In Pakistan” by Pakistan College of Law and Pakistan Center of Legal Research and Publication

PCLRP is organizing a symposium on the “State of Criminal Justice in Pakistan” and inviting participants to submit their papers which may be incorporated into the proceedings at the symposium as well as the publications that follow.

It is important to link your proposal to the following themes of the symposium:

  1. The Criminal Justice System and Some Preliminary Matters

This section would involve a discussion regarding the historical perspectives of criminal procedure and criminal justice. Areas that could be focused upon include:

  • Criminal Justice and the Constitution
  • Substantive Criminal Law: Legislation and Reforms
  • Criminal Procedure: Implementation, Difficulties and Issues
  • Criminal Courts
  • Modernization of Pakistan’s Criminal Law
  • Islamic Criminal Law and its Implementation.
  1. Criminal practice

This section would provide an insight into the different aspects of criminal procedure in light of the Constitution of Pakistan. Areas that could be focused upon:

  • Participants in the Criminal Justice Process
  • The Administrative Stage
  • Investigation of Offences
  • Commencement of Trial
  • The Role of the Public Prosecutor
  • Criminal Evidence
  • Judgment and Sentencing.
  1. Restructuring and Reforms

This section would engage into a discussion of how to bring about changes in substantive and procedural law in order to aid the criminal justice system in Pakistan to adapt to contemporary processes involved in the dispensing of criminal justice.

The different formats for your proposal are:

  • Sub-plenaries:

Oral presentations, which may include audio-visual support. The presenters have 20 minutes to present their material and to be responded to (20 minutes) either by the participants or other presenters. The moderator will have 5-7 minutes to summarize the main issues that arise and then open the floor for discussion.

  • Paper presentations:

Offer space for up to three contributions on similar themes. Each contributor, facilitated by the moderator, can give a short presentation of 20 minutes. The moderator will then coordinate a discussion between the contributors and their audience – 20 minutes.

  • Closed panel discussions:

The presenters are expected to encourage participants to share thoughts and experiences in a more informal way.

Criteria for Acceptance: All abstracts will be blind-reviewed by the editorial and advisory board. Relevance to the themes of the conference, usefulness and originality of approach are key considerations in the acceptance of papers.

Deadline for Call for Papers: 30th July 2017.

Date of Symposium: Saturday, 16th September 2017.

Fees: Registration for the symposium is free of charge.
