Myanmar President Signs Monogamy Bill
Thein Sein, Myanmar President, signed the Monogamy Bill into force, which legally prohibits marriage to more than one spouse or living with an unmarried partner, which many view as an attack on the minority Muslim population in the country. The bill is one of the four recent laws supported by the Committee for the Protection of Nationality and Religion (Ma Ba Tha), a Buddhist group, collectively named, “Race and Religion Protection Laws.”
According to Human Rights Watch, this law is “discriminatory” and incompatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and has suggested the president to reject it.
