Establishment of a Legal Aid Authority Announced by Punjab Government
Punjab Law Minister, Rana Sanaullah Khan recently announced the establishment of a Legal Aid Authority in Punjab, during a conference on legal aid organized by the Pakistan Bar Council in collaboration with the UNDP. The theme of the conference was “Legal Aid In Pakistan: The Next Steps” and was attended by many eminent legal practitioners, human rights activists and representatives from the civil society and media including:
Muhammad Ramzan Chaudhary (Chairman, Free Legal Aid Committee Punjab Bar Council),
Syed Ayaz Zahoor (Advocate),
Yasin Azad (former President Supreme Court Bar Association),
Azam Nazeer Tarar (Vice Chairman, Punjab Bar Council),
Fazl-e-Haq Abbasi (President. Supreme Court Bar Association),
Abrar Hasan (Advocate),
Ahmed Bilal Mehboob (President, Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency -PILDAT),
Asma Jahangir (former President, Supreme Court Bar Association),
Dr. Suhail Shahzad (Dean, Faculty of Law and Administrative Sciences, Hazara University, Mansehra)
and Justice Aliya Neelum (Lahore High Court).
The delegates actively contributed to the discussion on updating the Pakistan Bar Council Free Legal Aid Rules 1999.
