Notice To The Government On Plea Against Wireless Telegraphy Act

The Lahore High Court Chief Justice recently issued a notice to the federal government on a petition challenging the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1933 and the Television Apparatus Licencing Rules 1972.

Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Mian Mahmoodur Rashid filed the petition. As the Chief Justice took up the petition, Advocate Sheraz Zaka argued on behalf of the petitioner that the Act and Rules were discriminatory as they mainly focused on imposition of fee on television sets barring other wireless devices like mobiles and iPads as there were no rules to regulate these devices.

He said at present the laws were only applicable to television apparatus and not to other devices.

Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah issued a notice to the federal government inquiring absence of rules regarding imposition of fee on other wireless sets like iPads and mobile phones.

Hearing was adjourned till Oct 7, 2016.
