A large number of people in the Hindu community, particularly women, do not have the basic and sufficient documentation to prove their marital status and/or identity. They are also deprived of legal rights such as inheritance, remarriage, separation, adoption/custody of children, divorce and so on. This legislation will institutionalize marriages that take place within the Hindu community and other marriage related legal rights by providing the couple and/or family members with a shaadi parat — certificate of marriage issued by the marriage registrar, which certifies the solemnization of the Hindu marriage.
