Obama Plans to Close Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility Before Leaving Office
Denis McDonough, White House Chief of Staff, reported that President Barack Obama plans to fulfill his promise to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility before he leaves office.
The president has vowed to close the facility for years and says he feels that his successor has an obligation to complete the project. The Guantanamo Bay detention facility on the US Naval Base was set up after the events of September 11, 2001, to remove terrorists and suspected terrorists from action, but Obama believes it is no longer necessary, especially considering the extremely high cost of operation. McDonough said Obama is sure that he can close the facility while maintaining the security of Americans.
