Government Urged to Provide Legal Framework For Moon-Sighting Committee
Raza Rabbani, Chairman of the Senate, has given a deadline until Nov 15 for the government to provide a legal framework to regulate the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee, the body tasked with deciding the sighting of the moon at the start of every Islamic month. This Committee has been functioning for almost 40 years without having any rules and regulations and without any legal cover or constitutional status.
Every year there is a controversy over of the sighting of the moon and observing Eid, thus it has also been proposed that modern technology must be used to resolve this issue.
If the government does not present the draft law by the deadline, either in the National Assembly or in the Senate, then the matter would automatically be referred to the Senate Committee on Religious Affairs.
