UN resolution approves investigations into Burundi human rights abuses
The top UN human rights assembly has approved a resolution requiring investigations into human rights violations in Burundi, condemning violence in the country, use of excessive force by officials, and restrictions on freedoms. It was also reported that at least 400 people have been killed since April 26, and nearly 3,500 arrested in the political crisis and almost 220,000 people have fled the country. It was emphasized that an urgent action must be taken in order to prevent a civil war from taking place in the country. The council requested that government officials protect people against violence by investigating alleged human rights abuses and holding those responsible accountable.
It is important to mention here that Burundi was elected as a member of the 47-member Human Rights Council based in Geneva few weeks back and has been turmoil since the April announcement that President Pierre Nkurunziza would seek a third term in office, which he won in a disputed election in July.
