Secretary Summoned For Not Compensating Against Acquisition Of Property For Okara-Kasur Road

The Lahore High Court has summoned Communication and Works Secretary in a petition seeking contempt proceedings against him for defying court orders regarding payment of compensation to a widow against acquisition of her property for the construction of Okara-Kasur bypass road.

Advocate Taffazul Haider Rizvi argued on behalf of petitioner Syeda Kaneez Fatima that the court previously ordered the respondent secretary to decide the matter of compensation to be paid to the woman against the land acquisition.

He said the government had not filed any appeal against the order. The counsel said that the Secretary, instead of implementing the court judgment, attempted to reopen the case by holding that the project was a farm-to-market road for which no compensation would be paid. However, the counsel said that the question was already decided by the court as it was held to be a bypass road.

Advocate Rizvi urged the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the Secretary for defying the order.

Justice Ayesha A Malik heard the arguments and directed the Secretary to appear in person on June 29, 2016 to explain his position in the case.
