Pakistan International Disputes Weekend, Lahore 2023

[PRESS RELEASE]: The Pakistan International Disputes Weekend 2023 (PIDW’23) is Pakistan’s first premier international disputes weekend organized by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and MK Consultants LLP being held on the 20th and 21st of May, 2023 at the Pearl Continental, Lahore.

The primary purpose of PIDW’23 is to serve as a catalyst of change in bringing reforms to Pakistan’s traditionally litigious legal system through the promotion of dialogue and awareness. PIDW’23 has set the stage for constructive and meaningful dialogue facilitated by judges representing four provinces of Pakistan, legal practitioners from all over the world, Legal 500 firms from the United Kingdom and Pakistan, representatives of ADR centres such as the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the Attorney General of Pakistan and leading business community members from the construction, power and energy sectors.

The theme of PIDW’23 is Review, Reflect, Revive which aims to facilitate the existing legal framework of Pakistan by assessing the viability of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms and other reforms. Barrister Mian Sheraz Javaid, Chief Organizer of the Pakistan International Disputes Weekend and Chair of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Pakistan Branch has been proactively engaged in reforming Pakistan’s current legal framework in this regard and comments that, “PIDW is going to be the forum for reforms where esteemed members of the judiciary, national and international legal practitioners, business community and representatives of ADR centers from around the globe convene under one roof to review, reflect and revive the current legal landscape of Pakistan and I welcome you all to be part of this journey.”

PIDW’23 is a defining moment for Pakistan’s legal landscape as it marks the formal introduction of the recently drafted Domestic Arbitration Act 2023 on the 21st of May, 2023. Discussion around the proposed Act by legal experts, particularly the judiciary from all over Pakistan, will provide the participants of the event with a clear assessment of the assimilation of the Act into Pakistan’s domestic legal infrastructure.

The second day of PIDW’23 also includes the launch of The Young Members Group of CIArb Pakistan, an organization dedicated to bring together legal practitioners under the age of 40 who are committed to the field of alternative dispute resolution to build their careers in a highly dynamic and fast-growing world. Young lawyers looking to build a career in either arbitration or mediation, both locally and globally, will have much to gain from the scheduled discussions.

PIDW’23 also promises a specialized platform for optimum networking through the introduction of a premier networking lounge solely dedicated to networking.
