Delhi Gang-Rapist Walks Free

The youngest convict in a notorious 2012  fatal gang-rape on a bus in New Delhi  has been released from a youth correctional facility. This was followed by sparking street protests and angry condemnation from the victim’s parents. The rapist, who was a minor at the time of the crime, was sentenced to a maximum three years in a reform facility in August 2013.

The Convict has been handed over to an NGO due to fears over his safety. “He has been given a new identity and his criminal record has been expunged,” a police source added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the victim was a physiotherapy student  who died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital nearly two weeks after the attack.Under Indian law, the victim of a sex attack cannot be named even after their death.  According to the victim’s father the release of the rapist has cast serious doubts in serving justice in the country. The parents and women’s rights groups have been opposing the release of the youngest attacker, mainly on the grounds that it was unclear if he had been rehabilitated and was ready to be reintegrated into society.

The attacker was the youngest of a group of men who brutally assaulted the 23-year-old student on a bus. The incident had sparked immense global courage over high levels of violence against women.
