Supreme Court Orders Implementation of Urdu as Official Language

The Supreme Court, under a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, has ordered the immediate implementation of Urdu as the official language at all government departments.

The Ministry of Education and Professional Training and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) have also instructed all public and private sector universities to use Urdu as official language and to translate their respective Acts, Statutes and websites into Urdu from English.

According to Article 251 of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973, a provincial assembly may also prescribe measures for the teaching, promotion and use of a provincial language in addition to the national language.
